Following the successful upgrade of the grinding and mixing line at Zwolle 1, ForFarmers selected a similar concept for its Zwolle 2 facility. The existing installation, originally supplied over 40 years ago, was still operational but no longer met current requirements in terms of reliability, energy efficiency, and safety.
By building on a proven solution, ForFarmers minimizes operational risks while ensuring consistent feed quality across its production sites.
Reliable performance through a proven concept
Location: ForFarmers, Zwolle — The Netherlands – 2025
High-capacity grinding with low vibration
The original four hammer mills were replaced by two Van Aarsen GD Hammer Mills, each equipped with a 315 kW motor, delivering a combined capacity of up to 60 tph.
Key advantages of the GD Hammer Mill:
- Efficient grinding with large breaking plates
- Low energy consumption
- Robust construction with minimal vibration
The low vibration level allowed precise equipment, such as the premix dosing scale, to be installed directly next to the mills.
The grinding system is equipped with frequency-controlled drives for controlled start-up, while filters and explosion protection ensure a safe working environment.
Consistent mixing with proven technology
For the mixing process, a Van Aarsen MultiMix Paddle Mixer (10,000 liters) was installed, similar to other ForFarmers locations.
The mixer ensures:
- Homogeneity of CV < 5%
- Reliable discharge through well-sealing bottom valves
- Durable construction with stainless steel contact parts
This results in consistent, high-quality feed production.
Standardized performance with proven grinding and mixing technology
Smart standardization across production sites
The initial concept for the new installation was developed by ForFarmers, after which Van Aarsen carried out the pre-engineering, supply, and installation.
Standardization is a key principle within ForFarmers’ operations. Applying similar technologies across multiple plants ensures:
- Consistent product quality
- Synergy between locations
- Reduced spare parts inventory
- Increased operational flexibility
This approach also simplifies maintenance and improves overall efficiency.

Future-ready feed production
The modernization of Zwolle 2 demonstrates how a well-balanced combination of proven technology and targeted customization results in a reliable, efficient, and future-proof production line.

Future ready
Customized to fit operational needs
In addition to the standard configuration, several customer-specific optimizations were implemented:
- Additional inspection hatch
- Drive safety system
- Flexible coupling with gearbox
- Advanced liquid dosing system with individual nozzles
Up to eight liquids can be added directly into the mixer, ensuring accurate and uniform distribution without cross-contamination.
Premix addition is handled via a pneumatic conveying system with integrated weighing, minimizing manual intervention.
Efficient execution with minimal downtime
The project was executed in phases and completed within six months. Production downtime was limited to approximately one week.
Van Aarsen was responsible for the complete scope, from the distribution bin above the hammer mills to the finished meal elevator, including structural work and the integration of a molasses mixer.
